Our School - Pastoral Care

Clarence Valley Anglican School values each child as an individual and attempts to create an environment where a child feels safe, valued and respected.

Our Pastoral Care program is based around the following:

  • The School has the services of a Chaplain, who is a minister in the Anglican Church. The Chaplain is available to help and serve you during your time at school. The Chaplaincy seeks to be a place of welcome and hospitality for all members of the School community. We will be glad to assist you any way that we can and you will always find a friendly listening ear.
  • Establishing effective communication between parents and the school.
  • Tutor teachers provided for students in the Secondary School
  •  Junior School teachers have general oversight of the Pastoral Care of students in their class.
  • A focus on outdoor education as "peer building" and leadership development.
  • The school provides a part-time K-12 School Counsellor who services the school 4 days a week.
  • All school staff are provided with professional development in pastoral care to refine interpersonal skills.
  • Frequent reviews of welfare and associated policies eg. Bullying.
  • Our Pastoral Care program is assisted by the Federal NSCSWP program

Welfare Policy

Philosophy/Statement of Intent

At Clarence Valley Anglican School we believe that every person is equally important and that no-one has a right to harass, insult or cause offence to any other person for any reason. We particularly reject the way that some people might select to cause distress to others:

  • Because they are richer or poorer, older or younger
  • Because they are male or because they are female
  • Because they are a teacher or a student
  • Because of handicap or personal problems
  • Because of their looks or what they wear
  • Because they are small or tall, thin or fat
  • Because of the colour of their skin
  • Because of their religion
  • Because of their likes or dislikes
  • Because of their ability or struggle towards achievement

    Or for any other reason.

Role of Parents

It is the strongly held opinion of Clarence Valley Anglican School that parents have a vital role in promoting and supporting good behaviour at CVAS and that therefore effective home/school liaison is of vital importance.

CVAS presumes a right to expect that parents will give their full support in the careful application of the School Behaviour Policy.

To this end, we ask that parents might kindly:

  • Keep us informed of any behaviour difficulties they may be experiencing at home.
  • Inform us of any special circumstance or trauma which may affect their child’s performance and/or behaviour at school.
  • Inform us about any health problems their child may have.
  • Support the school’s policy of non retaliation.


Clarence Valley Anglican School provides a range of services and programs aimed at supporting students and their families in both the Primary and Secondary Schools. Services offered include:

Individual Counselling

If you are finding life a bit tough and are struggling to deal with something that has happened in your life, talking to a professional whose job it is to listen and facilitate positive change can make a difficult situation more manageable.

Parental Consultation

Many parents struggle to always know how to best to support their child when they are facing tough times. Sometimes being able to talk it through with an independent person can help bring clarity and understanding to a particular issue or situation.

Advocacy and Referral

If you have a specific issue that could be better dealt with by a specialist in the community then the School Counsellor can support you in finding the right service for you. For example: mental health, legal or sexual health services etc.

Group Work Programs

Throughout the school year, the School Counsellor offers a number of specific issue-based programs where students are often invited to attend. These programs may address issues such as grief and loss, self-esteem, relationships and bullying and provide an opportunity for the student to explore a particular topic.

Referral Process

Referrals can be made via the class teacher or your tutor. You can also come to the Office and make a time to talk with the School Counsellor. Parents can also make contact by telephoning the school.


The Counsellor at Clarence Valley Anglican School operates within strict guidelines regarding confidentiality. Discussions you have with the School Counsellor are kept confidential unless there is a risk to your safety or the safety of others.
